Facing legal threats in Sweden, The Pirate Bay divides and multiplies

February 26, 2013

With Anti-piracy groups closing in on The Pirate Bay’s Swedish haven, the world’s most infamous file sharing site did what any good pirate would do: Cut and run for more welcoming shores. As of Tuesday, The Pirate Bay no longer relies on the Swedish Pirate Party for its Web hosting services. That duty has been handed off to the Pirate Parties of Norway and Spain. Practically speaking, the move will not impact users, and The Pirate Bay will still be accessible via ThePirateBay.se. Behind the scenes, however, all Web hosting duties will be managed in two different countries where the legal environments are supposed to be friendlier towards copyright renegades. The new Web hosting arrangement appears to be a temporary one, according to a post on The Pirate Bay’s official Facebook page. “Next week (hopefully), we'll announce some MAJOR changes to the site,” TPB said. “Now don't worry, everything will look the same to you. The changes are all under the hood.” Outgunned by the Rights Alliance The Pirate Bay’s latest troubles began on February 17 after the Rights Alliance, an entertainment industry group in Sweden, threatened the Pirate Party with legal action if it continued to host The Pirate Bay. Rather than engage in a lengthy legal battle, the Pirate Party chose to hand off The Pirate Bay’s hosting duties to others. “You always have to choose your battles wisely,” Swedish Pirate Party Leader Anna Troberg said in a statement. “The Pirate Party's mission is not to produce martyrs for the copyright industry.” Troberg said the legal fight would only drain “money, energy, and focus” from the party’s upcoming campaign for Sweden’s national elections in 2014.
